Mumbai Announce Strong Squad for Ranji Trophy, Thakur to Lead Against J&K

India all-rounder Shardul Thakur has been named the new captain of the Mumbai team. The squad also includes Sarfaraz Khan and Ajinkya Rahane for their Ranji Trophy 2025-26 opener against Jammu and Kashmir. Thakur succeeds Rahane as Mumbai skipper after the former left his role ahead of the new season.
Mumbai, who have won the Ranji Trophy 42 times, will play their first match of the season against Jammu and Kashmir. The game will start on October 15 at the Sher-i-Kashmir Stadium in Srinagar. Mumbai, which had lost to J&K in the previous season by five wickets, is placed in Elite Group D along with Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Hyderabad, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Pondicherry.

The team also has India’s batter Sarfaraz, who hasn’t played for the Test side recently, and all-rounder Shivam Dube, who usually plays for India in T20 matches. Musheer Khan, who had missed the majority of the last domestic season 2024-25 after a car accident, gets his place back in the 16-member squad.
Mumbai and Chennai Super Kings opener Ayush Mhatre, who has also captained India’s U-19 teams during their recent tours of England and Australia, has been named in the Mumbai squad.
The squad will be without Shreyas Iyer, who is taking a break from red-ball cricket because of back problems, and Prithvi Shaw, who has shifted to Maharashtra after losing his place in the team last season.
Suryakumar Yadav is also missing from the squad. He had played in last season’s Ranji Trophy semifinal against Vidarbha, where Mumbai lost to the eventual champions by 80 runs.
