England Announce Playing XI for 2nd Test; Jofra Archer Returns, Two Debutants Included

England have announced their playing XI for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval, with several changes made to the side that won the opening match at Lord's. The match, which begins on Wednesday, will see Joe Root lead the team in the absence of regular captain Ben Stokes, while England have also handed Test debuts to wicketkeeper-batter Jordan Cox and fast bowler Sonny Baker.

The inclusion of Cox and Baker comes after Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were ruled unavailable for the contest. Cox has been on the fringes of the national setup for nearly two years and has consistently impressed in domestic cricket. Baker, meanwhile, earns his maiden Test cap after producing promising performances on the county circuit and is expected to add extra pace to England's bowling attack.

England have also recalled right-arm pacer Matt Fisher, who returns to the Test squad for the first time since making his debut during the Caribbean tour in 2022. Another major boost for the hosts is the return of Jofra Archer. The speedster missed the first Test after being rested due to workload management following a demanding IPL 2026 season with Rajasthan Royals.

The changes were further influenced by injury concerns within the squad. Ollie Robinson, who played a key role in England's 115-run victory at Lord's, was ruled out due to soreness in his right knee. England have also decided to leave out spinner Shoaib Bashir, opting instead for an all-pace attack to exploit the seam-friendly conditions expected at The Oval.

Speaking about the team combination, Joe Root expressed excitement over the variety available in England's pace department. "Some very exciting pace options, the likes of Jofra and Tonguey, and also Fish coming back in since the West Indies, and Sonny as well, with raw pace in the air," Root said. He added that the balance of the side had changed significantly and that the conditions at The Oval suited the chosen combination.

Root also backed debutant Jordan Cox to make an impact at the highest level. "He's been in and around the squad for the best part of two years. Clearly, he's in very good form and has been a standout performer in domestic cricket for a long time. Excited to see what he can do at this level," Root said. The stand-in captain believes Cox thrives under pressure and could prove to be a match-winner if he gets settled.
