Delhi Capitals are among the franchises that have featured in every edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) since the inaugural season in 2008. Delhi Capitals were known as Delhi Daredevils for many years before a name change. They made the semi-finals in 2008 and 2009 but were eliminated in the league stage in 2010 and 2011.
After reaching the playoffs in 2012, they were eliminated in the group stage in every edition from 2013 to 2018. They made the playoffs in 2019 and made their first-ever final in 2020. They finished runners-up going down to Mumbai Indians (MI) by five wickets. Delhi Capitals posted 156/7 batting first, which Mumbai Indians chased down in 18.4 overs.
In December 2018, Delhi Daredevils changed its name to Delhi Capitals. Regarding the rationale behind changing the team’s name, co-owner and chairman Parth Jindal said, “Delhi is the country’s power centre; it is the capital, therefore the name Delhi Capitals. Co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi added, “The new name symbolizes Delhi’s identity, and just like the city, we aim to be the centre of all action going forward.”
Under Rishabh Pant, Delhi Capitals finished first after the league stage in the IPL 2021 edition. They were widely termed as favourites to win the edition. However, they lost both the Qualifiers – going down to Chennai Super Kings, winning by 4 wickets in Qualifier 1 and to Kolkata Knight Riders by three wickets in Qualifier 2. In 2022, 2023, and 2024, Delhi Capitals couldn’t go beyond the group stage.
Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Glenn McGrath, AB de Villiers, Daniel Vettori, Amit Mishra, Ashish Nehra, Glenn Maxwell, Rishabh Pant, David Warner, Axar Patel, Quinton de Kock, Anrich Nortje and Prithvi Shaw among others are some of the prominent names to have featured in the IPL over the years.
As of December 2024, the brand value of the Delhi Capitals franchise is estimated to be around USD 80 million.
