PCB Introduces New Central Contract System Ahead of 2026-27 Season

PCB Introduces New Central Contract System Ahead of 2026-27 SeasonThe Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a major overhaul of its central contract system ahead of the 2026-27 cycle. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, Chief Operating Officer Sumair Ahmed Syed, and Director of High-Performance Aaqib Javed unveiled the new model during a press conference in Lahore on June 15. The revamped structure aims to make the contract allocation process more transparent and performance-oriented.

Under the new system, the PCB will move away from its traditional category-based grading model and introduce format-specific contracts. Player contracts will now be determined based on fitness standards, mandatory participation in domestic cricket, and performances in specific formats. The board believes the revised framework will better reward players according to their contributions and roles within the national setup.

Explaining the rationale behind the change, Mohsin Naqvi said, "We have prepared a system where 85 per cent of the contract criteria will be data-driven, while the remaining 15 per cent will be at the discretion of the selection committee." He added that several deserving domestic performers had previously been overlooked and that the new model would ensure a fairer and more transparent process.

PCB Introduces Format-Specific Central Contract Categories

The highest tier in the new structure will be Category AB, reserved for players who regularly represent Pakistan in both Test and ODI cricket. The PCB considers these players the backbone of the national team across formats. Importantly, if a player from this category is also selected for T20I cricket, their contract classification will remain unchanged.

To further emphasize the importance of red-ball cricket, the PCB has created Category A specifically for Test specialists. The board hopes this move will encourage players to prioritize first-class cricket and strengthen Pakistan's Test setup. By rewarding red-ball performers separately, the PCB aims to ensure that Test cricket continues to receive adequate attention.

White-ball specialists will be accommodated under Category BC, which includes players involved in ODIs and T20Is. Meanwhile, Category C will be reserved for T20 specialists who primarily feature in international T20 cricket and franchise leagues around the world. The PCB believes this structure will allow players to focus on their preferred formats while continuing to develop their skills

The board has also introduced a Development Category (D) for emerging talents. These players will work closely with the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore as part of their growth and progression toward international cricket. The PCB hopes this pathway will help identify and nurture the next generation of Pakistan cricketers while creating a clearer route from domestic cricket to the national team.
