The player draft for the sixth season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 featured several new players, new team owners, and plenty of excitement as franchises selected their squads. Earlier, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced that the tournament will use the Impact Player rule, and the draft process has now been completed. Held in Colombo on Monday, the draft lasted just under four hours, with teams required to pick a minimum of 18 players.

By the end of the evening, 97 players had been selected across five franchises, with Afghanistan stars, Sri Lankan internationals and several emerging talents finding new homes. The draft was particularly significant because teams were building squads around two major rule changes.

The LPL has introduced the Impact Player rule from 2026 and has also made it mandatory for every team to field at least one Under-23 player in their playing XI at all times. Four of the five franchises entered the season with new ownership groups and rebranded names. Jaffna are now SC Jaffna Kings, Galle have become Galle Gallants, B-Love Kandy will play as Kandy Royals, while Colombo will compete under the name Colombo Kaps.

The draft also showed that Sri Lankan players Pathum Nissanka and Matheesha Pathirana are currently dealing with injuries. Nissanka, who was included in Sri Lanka's squad for the West Indies tour, is managing his workload and may undergo surgery before India's tour of Sri Lanka later this year.
