LPL 2025 Postponed to Prepare for T20 World Cup 2026

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has decided to postpone this year’s Lanka Premier League (LPL), which was scheduled to run from late November to late December. The tournament will not take place in 2025. With Sri Lanka set to co-host the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 with India in February and March, SLC wants to focus on getting everything ready for the big ICC event instead of holding the LPL this year.
LPL 2025 Postponed as SLC Prepares Stadiums for T20 World Cup 2026
According to ICC rules, stadiums for the 20-team T20 World Cup must meet high international standards. So, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will focus on preparing the stadiums for the World Cup and move the Lanka Premier League (LPL) to a later date.
The three Sri Lankan stadiums for the T20 World Cup will be:
R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium (RPICS) in Colombo
Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele
Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium in Dambulla
SLC said all three stadiums are being improved. RPICS, which is hosting 11 matches in the ongoing Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, will continue its renovation work after the tournament ends.
“SLC believes this decision will provide adequate time to work on enhancing and upgrading the ground infrastructure to conduct a successful tournament in the country,” SLC said in a release.
