West Indies Gain Upper Hand as Louis and Athanaze Shine in Antigua Test Opener

West Indies Gain Upper Hand as Louis and Athanaze Shine in Antigua Test Opener

In an enthralling start to the Antigua Test, West Indies ended the first day at a promising 250 for 5 against Bangladesh, thanks to stellar performances by Mikyle Louis and Alick Athanaze. The duo came agonizingly close to reaching personal milestones, with Louis scoring 97 and Athanaze 90, but their efforts ensured a solid foundation for the hosts in this opening Test match.

Opting to bat first, West Indies found themselves in a precarious position early on. However, the 140-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Louis and Athanaze brought stability and flair to the innings. Their combined resilience and attacking prowess transformed the team's fortunes, allowing the West Indies to dominate proceedings for the majority of the day.

Louis, showcasing immense concentration and skill, faced 218 deliveries during his innings. His stay at the crease came to an unfortunate end when he was dismissed by Bangladesh's stand-in captain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, after spending a tense 27 balls in the nineties. Athanaze, who has shown great promise in his nascent Test career, once again fell in the nineties. He was dismissed by Taijul Islam, marking the second time in his career he has been denied a century after reaching the nineties.

Bangladesh's bowlers, led by Taskin Ahmed who claimed 2 for 46, initially managed to curb the scoring rate. However, they struggled to break the formidable Louis-Athanaze partnership. Despite the early discipline, the Bangladeshi attack could not capitalize on their decision to bowl first, with Mehidy and Taijul each picking up a wicket.

Following the dismissals of Louis and Athanaze, Justin Greaves and Joshua Da Silva took advantage of the second new ball, scoring freely and adding crucial runs towards the day's end. The play concluded after 84 overs due to a light drizzle and fading light, setting the stage for an intriguing second day.

As the match progresses, West Indies will look to build on their solid start, while Bangladesh will aim to regroup and capitalize on early breakthroughs in the coming sessions.
