Shakib Al Hasan's Decision to Miss ODI Series Shakes Bangladesh Cricket

Shakib Al Hasan's Decision to Miss ODI Series Shakes Bangladesh Cricket

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is still reeling from the disappointment of not being able to play his farewell Test at home against South Africa. The 37-year-old had hoped to conclude his career in front of local fans, but the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) denied him security for the match, leading him to remain overseas.

In light of this situation, Shakib has chosen to skip the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan. His absence comes after a complaint was filed against him and others in connection with a tragic incident involving political unrest in the country that resulted in the death of a young boy.

BCB President Faruque Ahmed confirmed Shakib's decision to withdraw from the three-match ODI series, stating that the all-rounder needs time to recover emotionally and physically from the missed farewell match. Shakib last featured in a two-Test series against India and is set to play in the Abu Dhabi T10 League for the Bangla Tigers.

The Tigers will face Afghanistan on November 6, 9, and 11 before traveling to the West Indies for two Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is. Having retired from Test and T20 formats, Shakib will focus solely on ODI cricket, with an eye on the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.

“Shakib couldn’t play his farewell Test in Bangladesh and hasn’t had much practice. He needs time to get back to cricket, and he is likely to miss the ODI series,” Faruque added.
