Tamim Iqbal Approves Major Salary Hike for Bangladesh Domestic Cricketers

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) ad-hoc committee president Tamim Iqbal has reportedly approved substantial salary increases for the country’s domestic women and men cricketers. Tamim was recently appointed head of the 11-member committee tasked with restoring the BCB’s reputation. Tamim said he was shocked to learn that a women cricketer in Bangladesh used to earn only about 1,000 BDT (around $8) for a one-day match, even after their pay had been increased earlier.
The report says that women cricketers will now earn about 15,000 BDT ($120) for one-day matches, 20,000 BDT ($160) for first-class matches, and 10,000 BDT ($80) for T20 matches. Additionally, the monthly salary for the top 36 women domestic cricketers has been increased to BDT 40,000 (USD 320 approx.) from BDT 30,000 (USD 240 approx.).
“This may not be ideal, but it is certainly an improvement, considering there are limits to how much can be increased at once," Tamim said.
Men’s Domestic Cricketers Pay Structure
| Category | Salary (BDT) | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|
| Category A | 65,000 | 540 |
| Category B | 50,000 | 415 |
| Category C | 40,000 | 333 |
First-Class Match Fees
| Type | Old Fee (BDT) | New Fee (BDT) | Old USD | New USD |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First-Class Match | 70,000 | 100,000 | 583 | 833 |
The 37-year-old Iqbal, who played 391 matches for Bangladesh, said that domestic players were earlier paid very low.
“There has been little increment in the past three to four years. I think the players were highly underpaid in the previous salary structure. These players work hard, and cricket exists because of their efforts. At the very least, they deserve fair compensation," he said.
“I am sure you all understand that the damage to cricket’s reputation over the last one and a half years must be corrected collectively. There will be criticism regarding whether we perform well or not, but no one here wants cricket to remain at its current low point," Tamim told reporters.
“We always want cricket to be a source of pride. Those who work or have worked at the BCB should proudly say they work here. I am not sure if that pride can currently be expressed given the activities of the past one and a half years. We must restore that pride," he added.
