Tamim Iqbal: A comprehensive biography of the Bangladesh cricketer

Tamim Iqbal, born March 20, 1989, is widely regarded as the greatest opener Bangladesh has ever produced. A left-handed dasher, he burst onto the scene with a stunning 51 against India in the 2007 World Cup. Over a glittering 17-year career, he amassed over 15,000 international runs—including 8,357 in ODIs, more than any other Bangladeshi batter. Tamim was the first from his country to score centuries in all three formats and to register a Test double hundred. Named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2011, he captained Bangladesh with a record 60% win rate in ODIs. After announcing his retirement from international cricket in early 2025, Tamim was appointed interim president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) in April 2026, becoming the youngest ever to hold the position, and has pledged to run for the role permanently. He is the nephew of former Bangladesh captain Akram Khan and currently lives with his wife and children in Chittagong.
