Rain washes out second T20I between Sri Lanka and Pakistan
Leading the three T20I series by 1-0, Pakistan were looking to wrap up the series and move one step closer to finalising their preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Sri Lanka and India. However, persistent rain led to the abandonment of the second T20I before a single ball could be bowled.
Will rain mar Pakistan’s World Cup campaign?
While there remains one game to decide the series winner, that would be the least of Pakistan’s worries. For one, they have lost a crucial preparation game to the rain. For another, they are scheduled to play all of their World Cup matches in Sri Lanka, unlike other teams, who will split their fixtures between Sri Lanka and India. This means the threat of rain will remain a constant concern throughout Pakistan’s World Cup campaign.
Although Pakistan will play their group stage matches in Colombo rather than Dambulla, where the ongoing series is being held, Colombo is similarly vulnerable to rain-related disruptions.
Hybrid Model Agreement
Pakistan will not play any matches in India due to an agreement between the two boards to host each other at neutral venues when one country is staging a multi-national event. Under this arrangement, Pakistan hosted India’s matches in the UAE during the 2025 Champions Trophy.
The third and final game of the series will be played on Sunday and, rain permitting, will decide the series winner. Pakistan won the opening match by dismissing Sri Lanka for 128 before chasing the modest target with six wickets to spare.
