Travis Head & Cameron Green to Miss the Rest of BBL 2025–26, Shift Focus to T20 World Cup 2026

The 15th season of the Big Bash League (BBL) is happening in Australia, and the tournament is now reaching its final stage. As the matches get more exciting, many teams are expecting a big boost from Australia’s Test players, who are returning after winning the Ashes 4–1.

Australian Test stars return to BBL, but Head, Green and Boland face a major miss

Even though most players are making a comeback to BBL, some stars will not play the rest of the season. Travis Head, Cameron Green, and Scott Boland will miss the remaining BBL matches. Head was Australia’s top scorer in the Ashes 2025–26, scoring 629 runs. He will now take a short break to recover and manage his workload. This is also the third season in a row that Head is skipping BBL, as he wants to focus on preparing for the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place next month in India and Sri Lanka.

Cameron Green does not have a BBL contract this season. After playing three Tests in the Ashes, he will continue working on his fitness. Green had major back surgery in 2024, and his goal right now is to get back to full strength before the World Cup.

Scott Boland is also not joining BBL for the rest of the season, as part of workload management. Nathan Lyon will also sit out due to a hamstring injury. The good news for fans is that many Ashes winners are returning to BBL from Saturday, January 10. Usman Khawaja, who ended his international career after the final Ashes Test, will join Brisbane Heat along with Marnus Labuschagne. Both players will play in the next match against Sydney Thunder.

Steven Smith, who led Australia in the final Test as stand-in captain, is also returning to his BBL team Sydney Sixers. Todd Murphy will also join the Sixers for their next match against Hobart Hurricanes. Hurricanes will also get support from opener Jake Weatherald and all-rounder Beau Webster.

Mitchell Starc, who won Player of the Series in the Ashes, will rest for a few days before joining Sydney Sixers. He is expected to play in the Sydney derby next Friday. Other Test players are also heading back to their BBL teams. Brendon Doggett will join Melbourne Renegades. Michael Neser will return to Brisbane Heat. Alex Carey will join Adelaide Strikers, while Josh Inglis and Jhye Richardson will play for Perth Scorchers. Michael Neser, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, and Jhye Richardson will represent their respective franchises in the league again after their Test commitments. With these big names returning, the final phase of BBL is set to become even more thrilling for cricket lovers.
