Predicted India Playing XI vs UAE – Asia Cup 2025 Opener
India will kickstart their campaign in the 2025 Asia Cup on Wednesday (September 10) at the Dubai International Stadium against the host country, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in a Group A Fixture before the blockbuster clash against Pakistan on Sunday (September 14).
India will be playing a T20I after seven long months, so the playing XI will be under the spotlight. With Suryakumar Yadav leading the side, the team is not looking to make big changes. However, Shubman Gill’s return, after being rested from T20Is last year, means he will open the innings alongside Abhishek. This leaves out the Kerala batter, who had been opening in recent games.
Even though Sanju Samson has been in great form, he may have to sit out. India wants Tilak Varma at number 3, which is not Sanju’s usual spot in T20Is. On top of that, Jitesh Sharma is set to take the finisher’s role reducing Samson’s chances further. Reports also suggest that Sanju is dealing with some fitness concerns right before the tournament, which makes his selection even tougher.
With the match being played in Dubai, India is likely to go with three spinners in their first Asia Cup game against UAE. Kuldeep Yadav, who last played a T20I in the 2024 World Cup final, could return, while Varun and all-rounder Axar Patel are also strong contenders. Both Varun and Axar have been steady performers in white-ball cricket and could be trusted on these conditions.
There has also been talk about whether Jasprit Bumrah should play. Many see him as more of a Test bowler, but India may not want to miss out on their best T20 weapon. Since Bumrah has had three weeks of rest after the England series, he looks fresh and ready. If he is picked, Harshit Rana might have to sit out with Bumrah joining Arshdeep as the main pacers, while Hardik Pandya adds support as the third seamer.
If these changes happen, some players will miss out. Shivam Dube’s all-round skills may not be needed, as India already has enough pace options and Jitesh Sharma for the finisher’s role. Rinku Singh could also miss the cut since he has mainly been picked as a backup batter. As for Harshit Rana, he might need to wait longer for his opportunity if Bumrah is unleashed right from the tournament opener.
