BCCI Demands Immediate Return of Asia Cup Trophy After Controversial Standoff with ACC Chief

BCCI Demands Immediate Return of Asia Cup Trophy After Controversial Standoff with ACC Chief

[ Poll: VwXVBGLK ]

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sent an official email to Asian Cricket Council chief Mohsin Naqvi, asking him to return the Asia Cup trophy to India. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told India Today that they are waiting for a reply from Naqvi. If they don’t hear back, they plan to take the matter to the ICC with an official letter. He added that the BCCI is handling the issue step by step and will keep following up until it’s resolved.

BCCI Demands Return of Asia Cup Trophy, Dispute with ACC Chief Continues

The Asia Cup is now at the ACC office in Dubai because the Indian team didn’t take the trophy from Naqvi after the final match. The BCCI has got support from the Sri Lanka and Afghanistan cricket boards, who have asked Naqvi to give the trophy to India, according to PTI.

"The BCCI secretary, BCCI's ACC representative Rajeev Shukla and representatives of other member boards including Sri Lanka Cricket and Afghanistan had written to the ACC president last week over handing the trophy to India," the ACC source said.

"But his response was that someone from BCCI should come to Dubai and take the trophy from him. So that matter has still not moved. BCCI has made its stance clear that it won't be receiving the trophy from him. So the matter will most likely be decided in the ICC meeting," the ACC added.

After beating Pakistan in an exciting match, the Indian players decided not to accept the medals and trophy from the ACC chief. In response, Naqvi refused to hold the usual award ceremony and told the ACC officials to take the trophy away. At the ACC meeting on September 30, the BCCI spoke out against Naqvi’s actions.

BCCI refuses Asia Cup trophy from ACC chief, demands immediate handover to India

They said that the Asia Cup belongs to the ACC. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla stressed that the 2025 Asia Cup trophy should be officially handed to the winning Indian team, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, and that it should be kept safely under the care of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Earlier, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had criticized the actions of the ACC chairman, calling them inappropriate.

"We have decided not to accept the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the senior leaders of Pakistan. That was a conscious decision," Saikia said.

"This does not give him the right to take the trophy and the medals with him. It is extremely unfortunate and unsportsmanlike. We hope the trophy and medals will be returned to India as soon as possible," he added.

Even after saying sorry to the ACC member boards, Naqvi stuck to his decision and refused to give the trophy back to the Indian team. He said that if India wanted it, their captain would have to go to the ACC headquarters in Dubai to collect it personally.

The BCCI promptly dismissed this condition, arguing that there was no reason for the Indian skipper to travel to Dubai to collect a trophy that should have been presented immediately after the final. The disagreement has made the already tense relationship between the two cricket teams worse, overshadowing India’s Asia Cup 2025 win.
