It’s the match that decides the winner of the biggest prize in Test cricket. The ICC started the World Test Championship (WTC) in 2019, with a two-year cycle. Nine teams play in a league format, and at the end, the top two teams in the points table play the final. The winner gets to lift the ICC mace.

Defending champions Australia, led by Pat Cummins, will face South Africa in the World Test Championship (WTC) final. This will be South Africa’s first time playing in a WTC final. They finished at the top of the points table for the 2023–25 cycle after winning their last seven Test matches in a row, moving ahead of at least four other teams. South Africa will be led by Temba Bavuma.

Australia are the current WTC champions. They beat India, who were playing their second final, in the 2023 final at The Oval. Australia won by a huge margin of 209 runs. Steven Smith and Travis Head scored centuries in the first innings, and then their bowlers kept India under 300 runs in both innings. Travis Head was named Player of the Match. A few months later, he did it again against India in the ODI World Cup final in November 2023, held in India.

Temba Bavuma will be leading South Africa in the World Test Championship final against Australia. After a tough run in the ICC Champions Trophy and a close loss to India in the 2024 T20 World Cup, he now has a chance to bring some big wins back home. Some people doubted South Africa would make it to the 2025 WTC final, but they earned their spot and will fight for the trophy. If they win, it’ll be their first ICC title since 1998, and Bavuma will be just the second captain to do it.

Since South Africa came back to international cricket in 1991, there’s been a rule to include non-white players. Bavuma is one of the few players to captain the team in all three formats.
