Breaking News: South Africa Explosive Batter Heinrich Klaasen Announces Retirement from International Cricket
South African power-hitter Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from international cricket, just ahead of the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia on June 11. While he isn't part of the squad for the big game, the news of his retirement has still come as a surprise.
Heinrich Klaasen shared the news of his retirement in an emotional post on Instagram. The 33-year-old was in great touch recently, even smashing a brilliant century for Sunrisers Hyderabad against Kolkata Knight Riders in the current IPL season. His sudden decision to retire just days after that knock has taken many by surprise. Klaasen represented South Africa across all three formats during his international career. He played 60 ODIs, scoring 2,141 runs and featured in 58 T20Is with exactly 1,000 runs to his name. Test cricket saw him the least, with just four appearances and a total of 104 runs scored.
"It is a sad day for me as I announce that I have decided to step away from international cricket. It took me a long time to decide what’s best for me and my family for the future. It was truly a very difficult decision but also one that I have absolute peace with. From the first day, it was the biggest privilege representing my country and it was everything that I have worked for and dreamed about as a young boy. I have made great friendships and relationships that I will treasure for life." Klaasen wrote in his Instagram post.
"Playing for the Proteas gave me the opportunity to meet great people that changed my life, and to those people I can’t say thank you enough. My road to wearing the Proteas shirt was different than most and there were certain coaches in my career that kept believing in me - to them I will always be grateful. To have played with the Proteas badge on my chest was and will always be the biggest honour in my career. I look forward to spending more time with my family as this decision will allow me to do so. I will always be a big Proteas supporter and would like to thank everyone that supported me and my teammates during my career." he added.
End of an Era: Klaasen Bids Farewell to International Cricket
Heinrich Klaasen was Sunrisers Hyderabad’s top retention ahead of IPL 2025, with the franchise investing a massive ₹23 crore in him making him the league’s most expensive player at the time. While SRH had a disappointing campaign overall, finishing sixth and missing the playoffs, Klaasen had a solid season personally. He scored 487 runs in 14 matches at a brilliant strike rate of 172.69. Heinrich Klaasen spent five seasons in the IPL, turning out for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru during his time in the league. His final appearance for South Africa came in the semi-final of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy against New Zealand, a match the Proteas lost by 50 runs.
