India’s Asia Cup Squad Update: Shubman & Shreyas Out, Bumrah Back, Top 3 Revealed
The selectors for Team India haven't finalized the squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, which is set to begin on September 9. The selection meeting, led by Ajit Agarkar, will take place in Mumbai on August 19. There could be some surprises as a few standout players from the recent England tour might not make the cut. According to a Cricbuzz report, Shubmаn Gill and Mohammed Siraj are among the players who might miss out on a spot in the 15-member squad.
Shubman Gill’s performance in England was amazing, scoring over 750 runs, a feat that ranks second only to the great Sunil Gavaskar in a single series. However, these runs came in Test matches, while the Asia Cup is a T20I tournament. Gill also had a standout IPL season with 650 runs as an opener, but the selectors are expected to stick with the tried-and-tested opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.
There’s always room for a third opener, so Shubman Gill’s name is definitely going to come up. But right now, Yashasvi Jaiswal seems to have the edge for that spot. It looks like either Gill or Jaiswal will make the squad for the Asia Cup (from September 9-28), but there’s still a chance neither gets picked. At the moment, Gill seems to be falling behind unless Test captain Gautam Gambhir pushes hard for his inclusion.
Shreyas Iyer’s IPL Success: Will He Secure a Spot for the Asia Cup?
As for the rest of the batting lineup, we’re likely to see Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yаdav, and Rinku Singh in the mix, with one spot still up for grabs. Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar are the frontrunners for that final spot, though Shreyas Iyer led Punjab Kings to the IPL final, might not be as lucky this time. When it comes to wicketkeeping, Jitesh Sharma looks set to be the second-choice keeper.
Despite being the highest wicket-taker in the recent series against England and receiving plenty of praise, Mohammed Siraj might find it tough to make the squad for the Asia Cup. This is mainly because Jasprit Bumrah, one of the world’s best bowlers, will lead the attack. The other pace spots are expected to go to Arshdeep Singh, with either Prasidh Krishna or Harshit Rana (or maybe both) also in the mix. Hardik Pandya, who bowled that crucial final over in the T20 World Cup, will take up another pacer role. Unfortunately, veteran Mohammed Shami is unlikely to make the cut.
When it comes to the spin department, we’re likely to see Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and vice-captain Axar Patel. There’s also a good chance that Washington Sundar, who was part of the last T20I squad in February, will secure a spot as well.
