Rinku Singh Likely to Miss Out on India’s 2025 Asia Cup Squad Amid Tough Competition
The Indian squad for the 2025 Asia Cup will be announced on August 18, and the inclusion of certain players is expected to pose a big challenge for chief selector Ajit Agarkar and his team. While the place and role of Test skipper Shubman Gill in the squad have been a major talking point, Rinku Singh’s spot in the 15-member squad is also under scrutiny.
Rinku Singh first grabbed attention during an IPL match where he hit five consecutive sixes off Yash Dayal to lead Kolkata Knight Riders to victory. However, his career has taken a downward turn recently. He missed out on a place in the Indian squad for the previous T20 World Cup and was only kept on standby.
Given his recent performances, it’s unclear whether his spot in the Indian team for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is guaranteed. He still has a lot to prove if he’s to secure his place in the squad for the mega event.
If Rinku Singh manages to make it into the Indian squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, the team management might consider him for next year’s global event. However, with Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal two players with proven IPL records back in the mix, the selectors will have to make tough decisions about who to leave out.
Rinku Singh’s Possible Miss and India’s Backup Finisher Choices
Even if Rinku misses out, India has other options for the finisher’s role, such as Shivam Dube (if Nitish Reddy doesn’t recover in time) and Jitesh Sharma could play as a second keeper and fulfill the finisher’s role as well. This gives the selectors some flexibility in their choices.
Both Shivam Dube and Jitesh Sharma bring more than just batting skills to the table. Shivam can bowl a few overs when needed, adding extra value to the team, while Jitesh has been outstanding behind the stumps and can take on the role of the primary wicketkeeper if required.
The Asia Cup 2025 is set to start on September 9, with India beginning their campaign against the UAE on September 10 at the Dubai International Stadium. The highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan will take place on September 14 at the same venue.
