BCCI Expresses Dissatisfaction Over Bumrah’s Absence in England Test Series, BCCI Demands Full Fitness for Asia Cup: Reports
Jasprit Bumrah’s decision not to play all five Tests in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England hasn’t gone down well with the BCCI, according to reports. There’s also some questioning of the sports science team at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. While India managed to level the series 2-2, Bumrah missing the second and fifth Tests raised a few questions.
Before the series, Bumrah had mentioned he’d only be available for three matches. However, it’s still unclear whether this was his call or one made by BCCI’s medical team. Neither Bumrah nor the board has shed light on this. The idea behind resting him was to prevent further injury and ensure his long-term career isn’t put at risk. Former New Zealand pacer Shane Bond had earlier warned that another back issue could potentially end Bumrah’s career. After taking a month-long break, Bumrah is expected to be fit and available for the Asia Cup T20 in the UAE, which will run from September 9 to 28.
A senior BCCI official, speaking to PTI on the condition of anonymity, said, “Look if Bumrah plays in the Asia Cup and if India go the distance till September 28, he won’t obviously play the West Indies Test series starting October 2. However, if there are no injuries, he will certainly play the two Tests against World champions South Africa in November.”
BCCI Tightens Rules on Player Availability for International Matches
The BCCI has made it clear to players that while fast bowlers' workload will continue to be managed, they cannot skip important games based on personal preferences. A senior official told PTI, "There have been discussions and the message will be sent across to the centrally contracted players, especially those who are all format regulars, that this culture of picking and choosing games won’t be entertained in the near future."
Earlier, it was reported that Bumrah had suffered a knee injury during the India vs England Test series, but according to the Hindustan Times, the pacer is now fit and ready to play. He is also expected to be available for the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. A major part of Bumrah's workload management seems to revolve around Test cricket, with BCCI's medical staff deciding how many red-ball matches he will play. If Bumrah features in the Asia Cup, there’s a possibility he may skip the West Indies Test series and instead play against South Africa.
A source familiar with the matter told Hindustan Times, "As announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar during the team selection, the decision on the number of Tests Bumrah will play was made in advance by the medical and fitness team. If he had been injured, he would have gone to BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for recovery and rehab."
