ICC Players of the Month: Warrican and Mooney Crowned for Stellar Performances

ICC Players of the Month: Warrican and Mooney Crowned for Stellar PerformancesThe ICC has announced West Indies' Jomel Warrican and Australia's Beth Mooney as the Men's and Women's Players of the Month for January 2025. Warrican's left-arm spin was key in West Indies' first Test victory in Pakistan since 1990, while Mooney made her mark in Australia's series victory over England in the Ashes. The winners were chosen through a global fan vote on icc-cricket.com and a panel of experts, which includes ICC Hall of Famers, former players, and media representatives.

Jomel Warrican has won his maiden ICC Men's Player of the Month award after beating Pakistan's Noman Ali and India's Varun Chakravarthy. The 32-year-old was simply unstoppable in January, taking 19 wickets in just two Test matches at an incredible average of 9.00. Even though Pakistan won the first Test, Warrican was a huge impact in Multan, where the pitch favored spinners. In that match, in the first innings, he conceded 69 with 3 scalps; meanwhile, during the second, with a remarkable individual effort he struck a career-high 7/32. Adding to that, he was involved in two runouts, meaning he played a part in all but one of Pakistan’s wickets in that innings.

Warrican’s brilliance carried into the second Test, where he made an impact with both ball and bat. Walking in at 95 for nine, he held his nerve with an unbeaten 36, putting together a crucial last-wicket stand with Kemar Roach to push West Indies to a fighting total of 163. With the ball, he continued to dominate, taking 4 for 43 in the first innings and 5 for 27 in the second, while also chipping in with 18 more runs. His all-round heroics led West Indies to a historic 120-run win earning him the Player of the Series award. Warrican is now the first West Indian to win the ICC Player of the Month award since Gudakesh Motie in May 2024.

“It’s an honour to win this award. One of my goals for this year was my first five-for in Test cricket, but I did not think that it would be this grand. I see this as one small step in my cricketing career, and I look forward to many more. I promised my captain something special in this series, especially when my father, my biggest supporter, predicted a phenomenal performance for me. Multan has a special place in my heart: not only because of the historic win for the West Indies beating Pakistan away from home but also by earning this prestigious award.” Jomel Warrican said.

Dominating the Ashes: Mooney Crowned ICC Women’s Player of the Month

As Australia cruised to Ashes victory, Beth Mooney showcased her trademark firepower, earning the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award. After a quiet start to the series, she delivered a crucial half-century in the third ODI in Hobart. With Australia struggling at 59 for four, Mooney’s gritty 50 off 64 balls helped them post 308 in 50 overs, completing an ODI series sweep over England.

She carried her form into the T20Is, cementing her spot as the top-ranked batter with 213 runs at a strike rate of 146.89. She scored 75 and 44 before producing a stunning unbeaten 94 off 63 balls in Adelaide her highest T20I score in over five years. Mooney beat West Indies’ Karishma Ramharack and U19 T20 World Cup winner Gongadi Trisha to claim the award, making it two in a row for Australia after Annabel Sutherland’s win in December.

“It’s an honour to be named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month and I’d like to thank everyone who voted for me. January was an incredible month for the Australian Women’s Cricket Team. Winning the Ashes in front of a home crowd was very special and to complete the series playing in the first ever day-night Test at the MCG in front of a record crowd for a Women’s Test is a moment that we will all never forget. This team continues to achieve amazing results, and I am so proud to be a part of it.” Beth Mooney said.
