Sheldon Jackson Retires: A Stalwart’s Journey in Indian Domestic Cricket

Sheldon Jackson Retires: A Stalwart’s Journey in Indian Domestic CricketSaurashtra batting stalwart Sheldon Jackson on Tuesday announced his retirement from professional cricket after a 15-year career. The 38-year-old played his final match in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Gujarat in New Delhi, where his team lost in a tough battle. In 105 first-class matches, he scored over 7,200 runs at an average of 45. With 21 centuries, 39 half-centuries, and a top score of 186.

In his farewell match, he scored 14 and 27 runs, but Gujarat beat Saurashtra by 98 runs in an innings win.

A Career Built on Hard Work

Jackson's cricket journey began when Joydeep Mukherjee, a former Bengal player, spotted his talent and gave him the chance to play for Kolkata Knight Riders. After waiting for years, he got his big break in December 2011 when he finally joined Saurashtra. The 2012-13 Ranji season was a big one for Jackson. He scored four fifties and three hundreds. His back-to-back centuries in the quarter-final and semi-final against Karnataka and Punjab played a key role in helping Saurashtra reach their first-ever final. His outstanding performances played a crucial role in Saurashtra’s maiden Ranji Trophy final.

His performance in the 2012-13 season earned him a spot in the India A team for the home series against West Indies A.

He was also a strong performer in limited-overs cricket. Last month, he announced that he was stepping away from his white-ball career. In 84 innings, he scored 2,792 runs with nine centuries and 14 half-centuries. His highest score was an unbeaten 133 in the 2022 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
