Asia Cup 2025: Sudharsan, Jaiswal, and Gill Likely to Be Picked After Strong IPL Performance

The 17th edition of the Asia Cup is scheduled to be held from September 9 to 26, kicking off one of Asia’s biggest cricket tournaments this year. As teams gear up, a key update from PTI suggests that Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, and Sai Sudharsan are likely to be considered for a spot in India’s squad. These three young players were part of the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, a five-match Test series between India and England, which ended in a draw. India won the final Test at The Oval by just 6 runs. 

Jaiswal and Gill, who is also the Test captain, haven’t played in recent T20 matches because of a packed schedule. But now, after the Test series, they’ve had about a month to rest. This break should help them feel fresh and ready for the upcoming Asia Cup.

India Balances Asia Cup and West Indies Test Series Ahead of Busy Schedule

India is also getting ready for a Test series against the West Indies, which starts on October 2 in Ahmedabad. Even though the dates are close to the Asia Cup, the selectors are said to be keeping all options open. If India reaches the Asia Cup final on September 28, some players might still be part of both the Asia Cup and the Test series.

"There is a five week break and with no cricket around, these three should walk into any T20 squad despite stupendous show by Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. In 21 days in Asia Cup, if one plays till final, there are 6 T20 games and that's not much of a workload. But obviously with 17 member squads allowed for the Asia Cup, selectors will weigh options carefully," a BCCI source told PTI.

Also, considering the pitch conditions in the UAE, where the tournament will take place, and with the T20 World Cup just six months away, picking Jaiswal, Gill, and Sudharsan seems like a smart move. Both Jaiswal and Gill last played a T20 International in July 2024 against Sri Lanka, while Sudharsan’s only T20I appearance came in the same month against Zimbabwe.

Their recent performance in IPL 2025 has made their case even stronger. Out of the three, Sai Sudharsan stood out the most. He had already made his ODI debut in late 2023, and this year, he had an outstanding T20 season. In IPL 2025, Sudharsan scored 759 runs in 15 innings. He was the top run-scorer of the tournament and won the Orange Cap.

India to Begin Asia Cup Campaign Against UAE on September 10

The official Indian squad for the Asia Cup is expected to be announced in the third week of August. India’s campaign will begin with a match against UAE on September 10 at the Dubai International Cricket Ground.
