Asia Cup 2025 Group B: Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh Super 4 Qualification Scenarios Explained

Asia Cup 2025 Group B: Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh Super 4 Qualification Scenarios ExplainedAfghanistan made things a bit tougher for themselves in the Asia Cup after losing to Bangladesh in an important Group B match in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday, September 16. Sri Lanka already had four points and now the “group of death” got even more interesting. Bangladesh showed they are serious about the second spot in the Super Fours. Their bowlers worked together really well and stopped Afghanistan from chasing the target of 155 in their 20 overs.

At one point, when Tanzid Tamim was hitting well, Bangladesh looked set to score over 170, maybe even 180. But Afghanistan fought back in the second half of the innings keeping the total to a chaseable 154. Noor Ahmad and captain Rashid Khan bowled really well. Later, Azmatullah Omarzai gave Afghanistan a boost with a quick 3 and it looked like they might win. But Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed stepped up at the end, bowling brilliantly and stopping Afghanistan from reaching the target.

Now Afghanistan’s chances are uncertain, but unlike the other teams, Rashid and his team still control their own fate. In Group B, Afghanistan have the best net run rate, thanks to their big 94-run win over Hong Kong in their first match. So, if they win their next game, it should be enough for them to move to the Super Fours.

The situation isn’t simple for the other two teams. Bangladesh could miss out on qualification because they are the only team in the mix with a negative net run rate. For them, the best chance is if Sri Lanka beats Afghanistan on Thursday, which would give Bangladesh a spot in the Super Fours.

If Afghanistan wins, Bangladesh will need a big help. They would have to hope Sri Lanka loses by at least 71 runs if batting second or with 53 or more balls left if batting first. If Sri Lanka lose by less than that, they will move ahead and Bangladesh will miss out. It is shaping up to be a thrilling finish in Group B with all three teams still in the race. From Group A, India have already qualified and either Pakistan or UAE will make it through today's match.
