Younis Khan in talks to replace Sarfaraz Ahmed as Pakistan's Test head coach

Younis Khan in talks to replace Sarfaraz Ahmed as Pakistan's Test head coachSarfaraz Ahmed, who was appointed as Pakistan's Test head coach in April this year, is already in discussions to be sacked following Pakistan's 2-0 whitewash against Bangladesh. The clean sweep was the second consecutive time Pakistan failed to win a Test game against the opposition, having done so in 2024 as well.

Younis, Hafeez in talks for dual role

In Sarfaraz's stead, former cricketer and captain Younis Khan is likely to be appointed. This will not be the only change made in Pakistan's red-ball team before their next Test assignment against West Indies in July 2026. Pakistan Cricket Board is also mulling over axing captain Shan Masood, with Salman Ali Agha the forerunner to replace him in the role.

Besides the coaching role, Younis can also replace Sarfaraz in the national men's selection committee. His role as mentor for Pakistan Shaheens, however, is unlikely to be affected by these appointments, sources state.

Additionally, Mohammad Hafeez could also be assigned a dual role, in important positions at that, within the PCB. Reports suggest that the former all-rounder could be offered the role to fill the vacant Director of International Cricket position, a position left empty since Usman Wahla was dismissed in October 2025.

Pakistan’s WTC survival chances

Pakistan fell four places in the World Test Championship points table following their loss to Bangladesh, sitting just above West Indies in the last place.
