Constant Captaincy Changes the Reason Behind Pakistan's Struggles, Says Haroon Rasheed

Constant Captaincy Changes the Reason Behind Pakistan's Struggles, Says Haroon RasheedFormer Pakistan cricketer Haroon Rasheed says that Pakistan cricket's struggles are largely caused by uncertainty around captaincy decisions. Constant changes in leadership have denied the side stability across formats, thereby affecting their performance.

Wrong way to fix the problem

Speaking in an interview with a local website, the former player, who has also served the Pakistan Cricket Board in several important positions, opined that changing captains after every series failure will not end the side's struggles.

Pakistan were recently clean-swept by Bangladesh 2-0 in a Test series. This was the second consecutive time Bangladesh whitewashed the side, having previously done so in 2024 in Pakistan.

This loss, specifically, and Pakistan's woeful run in the format generally has put Shan Masood's position as the side's captain in jeopardy. Several sources suggest that the left-handed batter is expected to be sacked as captain ahead of Pakistan's next Test assignment against the West Indies in July.

"When you decide to appoint a captain in any format, it would have been done with much thought process, so how can you keep on changing captains? How will this allow the Pakistan team to be consistent and stable?" Rasheed said rhetorically about Pakistan's habit of hiring and firing captains.

Pakistan could “fall further behind”

The former batter also maintained that teams like Pakistan need to constantly groom their youngsters to ensure the pipeline has enough talent coming through.

"There are a lot of things that need to be put right in Pakistan cricket. Or else we will fall further behind. Because we are not even grooming our young talent properly or giving them the right coaching and exposure to prepare them for long-term international cricket."
