India Announce T20I Squads for Ireland and England; Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Earns Maiden Call-Up

The Indian selection committee has announced the squads for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England, along with the squad for the Asian Games 2026. India will begin their T20I campaign against Ireland on June 26 before taking on England in a five-match series starting July 1. Meanwhile, India A will tour Sri Lanka for a multi-day series beginning on June 25. The biggest talking point from the squad announcement is the appointment of Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20I captain.

Suryakumar Yadav has not only lost the captaincy but has also been dropped entirely from the T20I setup. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained that Shreyas Iyer’s leadership credentials and recent success in franchise cricket played a major role in the decision. Iyer guided Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title and later led Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish, making him the preferred choice to lead India in the shortest format.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Earns Maiden Senior Call-Up

The squads for the Ireland and England T20I series remain identical. Shreyas Iyer will captain the side, with Tilak Varma serving as vice-captain. The squad also includes Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, Prince Yadav and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

One of the most notable inclusions is 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has been selected for all three assignments. The young batter enjoyed a remarkable IPL 2026 season, finishing as the tournament’s leading run-scorer and collecting multiple individual awards. His extraordinary performances have convinced the selectors to fast-track his entry into senior international cricket.

Bumrah Returns for Asian Games 2026

For the Asian Games 2026, the core of the T20I squad has been retained, but there is one major addition. Jasprit Bumrah returns to the squad after being rested for the Ireland and England series. Agarkar revealed that the decision was made to carefully manage the workload of India’s premier fast bowler ahead of a busy international calendar.

The Asian Games squad features Shreyas Iyer (captain), Tilak Varma (vice-captain), Jasprit Bumrah, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Shivam Dube, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Meanwhile, India A’s squad for the Sri Lanka tour will be led by wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel. The squad includes Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Harsh Dubey, Auqib Nabi, Yash Thakur, Anshul Kamboj, N Jagadeesan, Aman, Sheikh Rashid and Zeeshan Ansari. The tour is expected to provide valuable exposure to several emerging players pushing for national selection.

The Ireland series will serve as the first assignment under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership and could mark the beginning of a new era in India’s T20I setup.
