Will Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Play in the 2027 ODI World Cup? | Ro-Ko Farewell in Australia?

Will Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Play in the 2027 ODI World Cup? | Ro-Ko Farewell in Australia?Right now, there’s a lot of discussion around the ODI future of India’s two biggest cricketing icons, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Fans of both players have been holding on to one major hope – that the Ro-Ko duo will play in the 2027 ODI World Cup and retire only after that. In fact, both players have, either directly or indirectly hinted that they would like to continue till that tournament. But despite these indications several reports have been surfacing suggesting that they might not make it all the way to 2027. Especially in Rohit's case, the number of rumors seems to be much higher.

To add to the speculation, Cricket Australia is planning a special farewell match for both players during India’s upcoming tour. This has led to more confusion with some people wondering if this is actually the end for the duo. However, it’s important to understand that this farewell is being planned solely by Cricket Australia. It has nothing to do with BCCI or the Indian team management. It is simply a gesture by the Australian board to honor two legends have played some memorable cricket on their soil.

Ro-Ko Brand Fuels Massive Fan Interest

According to the current schedule, India will be touring Australia in October, starting from the 19th. The team will play three ODIs followed by a five-match T20I series. Out of these, the third ODI on October 25 at the Sydney Cricket Ground is being promoted as a farewell match for Rohit and Kohli. Tickets for this game were released four months in advance and were sold out within minutes. Australia is using the popularity of the Ro-Ko brand to promote the match and fans there are showing huge interest. Kohli, in particular shares a unique bond with the Australian crowd has added to the hype.

But again, this match is only being presented as their final game in Australia. It is not their final ODI overall. Both players are expected to continue playing for India after this series. In fact, India has a packed ODI calendar going forward. They are set to tour Bangladesh in August and then head to Australia in October. So there is no indication yet from the players or the BCCI that they are retiring from ODIs after the Australian tour.

Will Ro-Ko Feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup?

Now the big question is whether Rohit and Kohli will actually play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. There is still plenty of time left before the tournament almost 28 months. Like the 2023 edition, the 2027 World Cup is also scheduled to be held in the October to November window. This time, it will be hosted jointly by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. By the time the tournament begins, Rohit will be 40 years old and Kohli will be 39. Age will definitely be a factor, especially for Rohit, whose fitness and form will be closely watched.

After the IPL this year, reports began suggesting that BCCI might be looking for a new captain in the ODI format. In fact, some sources claimed that the board expected Rohit to retire after winning the Champions Trophy. But since he didn’t, there is now a bit of uncertainty around his future. The board has been thinking ahead about building a new leadership group for the 2027 World Cup. Gautam Gambhir’s coaching stint is also expected to end with that tournament although it could be extended depending on performance.

ODI Captaincy Could Mirror Test Scenario

If we look at how things unfolded before the England Test series, where Rohit was under subtle pressure regarding his Test captaincy something similar could happen in ODIs too. If his performances drop or if India starts losing key ODI series, there is a good chance that the selectors may begin nudging him towards retirement. But as of now, Rohit is in great form and his captaincy record in white-ball cricket is outstanding. Under his leadership, India has only lost one match across the last three ICC tournaments. So at this moment, there is no strong reason for the BCCI to ask him to step down.

Looking ahead, India is set to play at least 27 ODIs across nine bilateral series until the end of 2026. This number could increase with additional series or tournaments like the Asia Cup, which is expected to be held in the ODI format before the World Cup. So in total, India might end up playing more than 35 ODIs before the 2027 tournament. The future of both players will heavily depend on how they perform in these matches. The same logic applies to Virat Kohli as well.

2027 World Cup Still a Real Possibility for Ro-Ko

There is intense competition for spots in the team. Young players are pushing hard especially for the opening and number three positions. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are among the top contenders and there are talks that Shreyas might be the front-runner to take over as the next ODI captain. So for Rohit and Kohli to make it to the 2027 World Cup, they not only need to stay in form but also remain injury-free. Any major dip in performance or back-to-back series losses could increase pressure on them, similar to how things played out in the Test format after the loss to New Zealand.

Another challenge is fitness. As players grow older and limit themselves to just one format maintaining fitness becomes tougher. Unlike younger players who play domestic cricket to stay match-ready, senior players like Rohit and Kohli mostly rely on international and IPL matches. So they must focus extra on their fitness routines to stay in top shape. If they manage that and if India continues winning, no one will question their place in the team.

But One Bad Phase Could Change Everything

But the moment performance dips or the team starts losing, the retirement talk will begin. As of now, though, the ball is in their court. Both players are in good form and India is winning matches. If this continues for the next couple of years, there is every chance we will see the Ro-Ko duo playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, if things go wrong midway, we may not see them in that tournament after all.
