Rohit Sharma Retirement: Indian Captain Finally Breaks Silence on His Future

Rohit Sharma Retirement: Indian Captain Finally Breaks Silence on His FutureIndia's new ODI approach was proven right when Rohit Sharma's team won their first major 50-over title in 12 years. On Sunday, March 9, India won the Champions Trophy 2025 final in Dubai by defeating New Zealand by four wickets. India went past two-time winners Australia to become the first team to win the Champions Trophy three times. Also, Rohit Sharma became only the second Indian captain to win multiple ICC men's white-ball titles, after MS Dhoni. There was a lot of talk about the Indian captain retiring from this format after the tournament, but Rohit has finally shared his decision.

Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup in 2024. Fans and experts expected something similar after this big tournament, but Rohit made it clear that his time in the 50-over format is not ending, and he will not retire from ODIs.

"One more thing. I'm not going to retire from this format, just to make sure that no rumours are spread moving forward," said Rohit Sharma in the post-macth press conference.

India captain Rohit Sharma created history by becoming the second Indian skipper to win two ICC trophies. He had earlier led India to victory in the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup in Barbados. Before Rohit, India won ICC trophies under the leadership of MS Dhoni (3), Sourav Ganguly (1), and Kapil Dev (1).

With his brilliant knock of 76 (83), which included three sixes and seven fours, Rohit led the team from the front. He started strong with his trademark pull shot, smashing a huge six off Kyle Jamieson on his second delivery. He also noted that this was his first 50-plus score in an ICC tournament final, reaching his half-century in just 41 balls.

Before this, Rohit Sharma became the first captain in international cricket to lead his team to the final of all four major ICC events: the Champions Trophy 2025, the T20 World Cup 2024, the ODI World Cup 2023, and the World Test Championship 2023. Australia handed India heartbreaking defeats in both the WTC final and the ODI World Cup final. However, under Rohit's leadership India made an incredible comeback, winning back-to-back ICC trophies for the first time in their history.
