Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement from Test Cricket, Will Continue in ODIs

Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement from Test Cricket, Will Continue in ODIsRohit Sharma has shocked the cricketing world by announcing his retirement from Test cricket just ahead of India’s five-match series against England. The timing caught everyone off guard coming right in the middle of IPL 2025 and only weeks before the England tour begins on June 20.

Rohit Sharma took to Instagram to announce his retirement from Test cricket leaving fans emotional with his heartfelt message. “Hello everyone! I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It has been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support through the years. I will continue to represent India in ODI format,”.

His post marked the end of a memorable chapter in Indian cricket, as one of the game’s most elegant openers bids goodbye to the red-ball format.

Final Test Ends in Defeat as India Lose Series to Australia

Rohit Sharma’s final outing in Test cricket came during the fourth match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a happy ending, as India lost that game and Rohit was left out of the squad for the fifth and final Test. Without him, India went on to lose the series 1-3 handing Australia a memorable away triumph and marking a disappointing finish to Rohit’s red-ball journey.

Rohit Sharma finished his Test career with 4,301 runs in 116 innings at an average of 40.57 including 12 hundreds and 18 fifties. But 2024 was a struggle over eight Tests and 15 innings, he only managed an average of 10.93, the lowest mark for any top‑seven batter with that many innings that season. That dip made it clear he was finding red‑ball cricket tough, and it likely helped him decide to hang up his Test boots.

Rohit’s struggles in 2024 were hard to miss, he was dismissed for single-digit scores in 10 of his 15 innings, the most by any top-seven batter that season. It highlighted how tough things had become for him in Test cricket. Over his captaincy stint, he led India in 24 Tests winning 12 and losing nine.

Earlier, in June 2024, he had also retired from T20Is after guiding India to a thrilling seven-run win over South Africa in the T20 World Cup final. Right now, though, Rohit is back in form, batting brilliantly for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025. With him stepping away from Tests, there’s a good chance Jasprit Bumrah could take charge of the team for the upcoming five-match series against England.
