Who is Senuran Muthusamy? Indian-Origin South African Batter Hits Maiden Test Century in Guwahati

Senuran Muthusamy played the best innings of his Test career on Day 2 of the second Test in Guwahati. He scored his first-ever Test century in 192 balls, helping South Africa take strong control and leaving India struggling. His previous best score was 89 not out against Pakistan earlier this year.

Starting the day carefully, Muthusamy and his partner Kyle Verreynne played patiently. They only attacked loose balls and stayed safe otherwise. Muthusamy reached his fifty in 121 balls and then started scoring more freely while staying calm and focused.

India got a breakthrough after tea when Verreynne was stumped for 45, but South Africa kept scoring. Muthusamy then joined Marco Jansen, and together they built an important partnership that took the team past 400 runs. By the end of the second session, South Africa were in full control, thanks to Muthusamy’s big innings and steady mind under pressure.

Senuran Muthusamy was born in Durban, South Africa, on February 22, 1994. His family is from India, and still, have relatives in Nagapattinam, Tamil Nadu. He attended Clifton College and then graduated with a degree in social science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. He started playing cricket as a student, and almost immediately after entering, he became one of the best players in local competitions.

Muthusamy played for KwaZulu-Natal from Under-11 to Under-19 levels. He then joined South Africa’s Under-19 team and got a professional contract with the Dolphins in 2015-16. At first, he was a top-order batter, but later he became a strong all-rounder, contributing with both bat and ball.

He made his Test debut on South Africa’s 2019 tour of India in Visakhapatnam. His first Test wicket was the Indian captain Virat Kohli, caught and bowled. Even though it’s tough to get a permanent place in the team because of strong competition, Muthusamy remains an important player for South Africa.
