KKR Stay Alive in Playoff Race After Clinical 4-Wicket Victory Over Mumbai Indians

The Mumbai Indians failed to get off to a good start as Ryan Rickelton perished cheaply for 6. He was dismissed by Cameron Green, who struck again in the same over to remove Naman Dhir for a duck. Rohit Sharma fell soon after for 15 as MI slipped to 23/3 early in the innings. Suryakumar Yadav’s disappointing season with the bat continued as he departed for 15 off just 6 balls. At the end of 8 overs, MI were struggling at 57/4 before rain interrupted play for nearly an hour.

Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya clearly struggled to pick the two KKR mystery spinners, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine. Tilak endured a tough stay at the crease before being dismissed for 20 off 32 balls, while Hardik fell for 26 off 27 deliveries. MI kept losing wickets in clusters and never really managed to build momentum through the middle overs.

Corbin Bosch then played a superb cameo down the order, smashing an unbeaten 32 off just 18 balls, which helped MI push their total past the 140-run mark. They eventually finished on 147/8 from their 20 overs, giving their bowlers something to defend. Two wickets apiece for Saurabh Dubey, Kartik Tyagi and Cameron Green for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

In reply, Finn Allen, who came in as the impact substitute for the Kolkata Knight Riders, was dismissed cheaply for 8 in the very first over of the innings by Deepak Chahar. Ajinkya Rahane and Manish Pandey then steadied things with a 38-run stand for the second wicket. Rahane looked in decent touch before being dismissed for 21 in the final over of the powerplay by Corbin Bosch. Pandey, meanwhile, played the perfect anchor’s role from the other end, rotating strike smartly and continuing to milk the Mumbai Indians attack with a calm and composed approach.

Manish Pandey, along with Rovman Powell, stitched together a crucial 64-run partnership for the fourth wicket, which pretty much killed the chase for the Mumbai Indians. Pandey narrowly missed out on a well-deserved half-century as he was cleaned up by Jasprit Bumrah for 45 off 33 balls. Powell, too, fell short of his fifty after a handy 40-run knock. The wickets came a little too late for MI to make a comeback into the contest. 

Tejasvi Dahiya made his IPL debut tonight after coming in as the concussion substitute for Angkrish Raghuvanshi, but managed just 11 off 12 balls. Rinku Singh remained unbeaten on 9 and finished things off in style, smashing the winning runs for the Kolkata Knight Riders as they sealed a comfortable 4-wicket victory with 7 balls to spare. Corbin Bosch (3/30) was the pick of the bowlers for the Mumbai Indians.
