Usman Khawaja Scores Maiden Double Century as Australia Dominates Sri Lanka in Galle Test

Usman Khawaja Scores Maiden Double Century as Australia Dominates Sri Lanka in Galle TestOn January 30, 2025, the first test match against Sri Lanka. Usman Khawaja scored his first double-century against Sri Lanka. Khawaja started his innings on Day 2 with 147 runs and reached 150 with a single. After that, he started hitting the first boundary of the day by sweeping Peiris to deep mid-wicket.

Usman Khawaja scored many boundaries for the off-spinner and Steve Smith also played an excellent knock. Their partnership is 250 runs, and Khawaja got a chance on 177 when Kushal Mendis missed a run-out opportunity and a stumping.

Finally, the partnership came to an end with Smith's wicket for 141 runs, lbw by Jeffrey Vandersay. Also, Khawaja was scoring runs and taking control of the innings. He scored 200 runs, by scoring many boundaries before reaching his double century in 290 balls. Khawaja became the first Australian to score a double century in Sri Lanka and his previous highest score of 195* against South Africa in January 2023.

Australia holds a strong position at lunch on Day 2

Usman Khawaja kissed the turf after the double century. Before, his highest score was 195 against South Africa, just five runs ahead of the double-century rain came, so they were given early stumps.

With this rain delays on Day 3 and the first session of Day 4 not played, Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, had no choice but to declare the innings, leaving Khawaja on 195. But finally, Khawaja scored 200 runs against Sri Lanka, creating a new record for the highest score by an Australian batter in Sri Lanka, Before this Justin Langer was the highest scoring 166 runs in 2004 in Sri Lanka. By lunch on Day 2, Australia was strong position at 475/3, with Khawaja scoring 204* and Josh Inglis scoring 44* with a 74-run partnership.
