The Ultimate Record of T20I Hat-Tricks: From Brett Lee to Mohammad Nawaz

Pakistan’s spin-bowling all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz shone with both bat and ball, helping his team secure an easy win over Afghanistan in the T20I Tri-Series final at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Mohammad Nawaz had a dream match as Pakistan crushed Afghanistan by 75 runs. He first took a hat-trick and ended with brilliant bowling figures of 5 wickets for just 19 runs, before also chipping in with 25 runs with the bat. With this, he became the third Pakistani after Faheem Ashraf and Mohammad Hasnain to claim a T20I hat-trick.
"To be honest, the plan was very simple. We knew that the pitch was very difficult for batting. At the halfway stage, we knew that we got enough runs on the board. Disciplined bowling was important which we did and we found success. When I bowled the first two balls, there was some turn. So, I knew in what pace I had to bowl in this surface. I wanted to keep the stumps and pads in the game," Nawaz said in Post-match presentation.
Nawaz’s Hat-Trick and Five-Wicket Haul Power Pakistan to T20I Tri-Series Title
Pakistan, after winning the toss, set Afghanistan a target of 142. But Afghanistan’s batting completely collapsed. Only captain Rashid Khan and opener Sediqullah Atal reached double figures as they were bowled out for just 66 runs. The win gave Pakistan a big boost ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup.
Nawaz’s performance was full of records. He became only the fifth Pakistani to take five wickets in a T20I, and just the third spinner to do so. He also created history by becoming the first Pakistani bowler to have both a five-wicket haul and a hat-trick in men’s T20Is. On top of that, he is now only the fifth player in the world, and the first Pakistani, to score 25+ runs and take five wickets in the same T20I match.
For the record, Australia’s Brett Lee was the first-ever bowler to claim a T20I hat-trick, against Bangladesh in 2007.
