Sri Lanka Announce Squad for 2nd Test; Milan Ratnayake Ruled Out Due to Injury
Sri Lanka has announced a 19-member team for the second Test against Bangladesh, which will be played from July 25 to 29 at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. There are two changes from the team that played in the first Test, which ended in a draw due to rain. Experienced all-rounder Angelo Mathews has retired from Test cricket after playing in that match in Galle, where Bangladesh had put in a strong performance.
“The Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee has named the following 19-member squad for the second Test match,” the official statement said. Sri Lanka has added left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage and fast bowler Vishwa Fernando to the team for the second Test against Bangladesh.
Wellalage, who made his debut against Pakistan, gets another chance even though he didn’t take any wickets in his first Test. On the other hand, Fernando brings experience to the team with 27 Tests and 79 wickets. He could be helpful with the ball, especially early on in Colombo’s pitch, which supports fast bowlers. “Milan Rathnayake will not play in the second Test as he picked up a left side strain while bowling in the first match,” the statement added.
Thrilling Start to WTC Ends in a Test Draw
Once the Test series is over, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will move on to three ODIs on July 2, 5, and 8, then finish the tour with three T20s on July 10, 13 and 16. The Tests kicked off their World Test Championship 2025–27 campaign and ended in a tough well-fought draw. For Bangladesh, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto led the way with 148 and Mushfiqur Rahim added a brilliant 163 to push the team to 495. Litton Das also scored in nicely with a solid 90.
Sri Lanka gave a strong reply, thanks to a brilliant 187 from Pathum Nissanka. Dinesh Chandimal added 54 and Kamindu Mendis chipped in with 87 as the home side posted 485 runs. In the second innings, Shanto impressed again with another century becoming only the 18th Test captain to score hundreds in both innings of a match. Shadman Islam also played well scoring 76 before Bangladesh declared at 285/6. Sri Lanka had a shaky start at 48/4, but the match eventually ended in a draw.
