Sam Konstas Departs Sri Lanka to Rejoin New South Wales for Shield Game

Sam Konstas Departs Sri Lanka to Rejoin New South Wales for Shield GameKonstas, who had a memorable debut against India and faced Jasprit Bumrah in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, was selected for the Sri Lanka tour. But the selectors chose to drop him as he didn't have enough experience in the spin-friendly Asian conditions. They promoted Travis Head as an opener along with Usman Khawaja. Josh Inglis made his Test debut and immediately made an impact by scoring a brilliant century.

The selectors have sent Konstas back home to join New South Wales for their upcoming Sheffield Shield match against Queensland, beginning Saturday (February 8). After Australia has guaranteed a place in the World Test Championship final and leads the series 1-0, decision entails virtually no risk.

"That’s the plan. Hopefully, I can be back for the first game. It's been a huge honor being in the squad and learning from the likes of Travis Head, Steve Smith, and Usman Khawaja the way they go about it. And obviously having experience in the Asian continent in Dubai," Konstas said.

"It’s been about understanding what works in these conditions, and hopefully I can emulate that after I get back to Sydney. Understanding your strengths and trying to do it for as long as possible in these conditions." Konstas added.

The move comes after increasing calls to release Konstas for state cricket, as he was unlikely to feature in the second Test. Former Australia captain Ian Healy and wicketkeeper-batter Brad Haddin were among those who strongly advocated for his return to domestic cricket.

Head Backs Konstas as Potential Opener for WTC Final

Travis Head will also continue opening after his quickfire 57 off 40 in the first Test. However, the left-hander showing his support to Konstas as a probable opener for Australia in the final of the World Test Championship against South Africa at Lord's.

Head admitted that he would likely move back to the middle order, with Konstas opening in the WTC final. “Most likely I’d go back in the middle order and Sam would open,” Head said before the second Test. “But I’m glad I’m not a selector. Josh has had an amazing start, the guys are playing well, and Greeny is going to be fit. So, fitting everyone in won’t be easy. That’s what we want—an Australian team that’s tough to break into."

Praising Konstas’ fearless approach, Head added, “The way he took on the game in Melbourne shows his confidence. It’s great to have a young guy who plays the right way, a bit naive but full of belief. He has a huge future for Australia. The key will be how he handles adversity over the years, and so far, he seems to be dealing with it really well.”
