Marnus Dropped, Inglis and Konstas Confirmed for WI Opener
Australia have made a significant change to their lineup for the first Test against the West Indies, with Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith ruled out of the series opener in Barbados. In their place, Sam Konstas and Josh Inglis have been confirmed to take the field.
The decision comes after Labuschagne's disappointing performances in the recent World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, where he scored just 17 and 22 runs, subsequently being outperformed by Marcus Harris. Since holding the No. 1 ICC Test batting ranking in early 2023, the 30-year-old's form has gradually declined, with his last century coming in the fourth Ashes Test in Manchester that year.
Australia's selection chairman George Bailey expressed confidence in Labuschagne's potential to regain his best form, stating, "Marnus can be a very important player for us when at his best. He understands that his output hasn't met the expectations of either the team or himself. We will continue to work with him to rediscover his game and expect him to rise to the challenge."
Smith, on the other hand, has been ruled out due to a dislocated finger sustained during the WTC final. The injury occurred while fielding, and although he avoided surgery, he is required to wear a splint for up to eight weeks. Despite this, there is hope that he may return for the second Test in Grenada, starting on July 3rd, provided he can manage to bat with the splint on.
"We've decided to give Josh and Sam the opportunity to replace Steve and Marnus," Bailey explained. "We're excited to see them further develop their burgeoning Test careers. Josh, in particular, showed great intent and ability to apply pressure on the opposition in his debut Test against Sri Lanka earlier this year."
Konstas, who made a promising start to his Test career with a debut performance against India, is expected to open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja. However, Inglis' position is less certain, given Cameron Green's recent batting struggles. Inglis scored 5 and 6 in his Test debut against Sri Lanka.
The first Test at Kensington Oval is set to commence on Wednesday, June 25th (AEST midnight Thursday), and will be broadcast on ESPN in Australia, as well as on Foxtel, Kayo Sport, Disney+, and Fetch TV.
