Australia Drop Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith Ruled Out for West Indies Series

Australia Drop Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith Ruled Out for West Indies Series
Australia have made significant changes to their lineup for the upcoming Test series against the West Indies, with Marnus Labuschagne being dropped and Steve Smith ruled out due to injury. Cricket Australia announced on Friday that Smith will miss the opening match of the three-match Test series following a finger injury sustained in the World Test Championship final loss to South Africa at Lord’s last weekend. Smith is expected to return for the second Test.

Chief selector George Bailey revealed that teenage opener Sam Konstas and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis will replace Smith and Labuschagne. Bailey said, "We have decided to allow Josh and Sam to replace Steve and Marnus. We are excited to see them get the chance to further their fledgling Test careers."

Sam Konstas, the 19-year-old opener, made his Test debut with an impressive 60 against India in Melbourne last December. Josh Inglis, 30, has mostly played short-form cricket for Australia, but he scored a century on debut in the Test series win in Sri Lanka in February.

Labuschagne, who averages 46.19 in 104 Test innings with 11 centuries and 23 half-centuries, has struggled for form in recent series. He hasn't scored a Test century since the 2023 Ashes series in Manchester and has failed to score above 26 in his last four Test matches. Bailey added, "Marnus at his best can be a really important member of this team. He understands his output hasn't been at the level we, or he, expects. We will continue working with him on the areas of his game we feel he needs to rediscover."

The batting order and starting XI will be finalized closer to the start of the Test next Wednesday. The second Test is scheduled to begin on July 3.
