Steve Smith bowls first over since 2019 in PSL Eliminator

Multan Sultans’ overseas pick, Steve Smith, who is also the PSL’s most expensive player, was seen playing a dual role in Eliminator 1. Smith was handed the ball in the eleventh over of the second innings as Multan Sultans seemed to run out of options against Hyderabad Kingsmen’s onslaught. Until that point, the side had used six bowlers in the first ten overs. Not only did Smith bowl, but he also tweaked his usual action and took on the role of a leg-spinner.

A rare wicket, but little impact

After conceding 14 runs off four balls, which included two consecutive sixes off Usman Khan’s bat, Smith got the last laugh by dismissing the batter. Usman mishit Smith’s delivery and was caught by Mohammad Nawaz at long-on. This was the Australian batter’s first over in a competitive game since 2019, when he bowled for Comilla Victorians against Rangpur Riders. His last T20 wicket, however, came in August 2018 in the Caribbean Premier League for Barbados Tridents.

Hyderabad cruise through as Multan exit

The wicket did little to dent Hyderabad’s dominance as they managed to get past Multan comfortably. Multan were beaten by eight wickets as they crashed out of the league. This is only the second time the side has been eliminated without making it to the final after reaching the playoffs.
