Mumbai Plans Massive 100,000-Seat Cricket Stadium Near Thane

The city of Mumbai is planning to build a new cricket stadium with the Mumbai Cricket Association. This plan is supported by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis. The new stadium is expected to be very big and could hold around 100,000 people, making it a major landmark. Mumbai is the central hub for cricket in India, as many legendary cricketers have made it to the Indian team as well over the years. Under the Mumbai Cricket Association, legendary players like Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma have made India proud over the years.
In the last two T20 World Cups, players like Rohit Sharma, Shivam Dube, Suryakumar Yadav, and Yashasvi Jaiswal have been part of the team. During a felicitation event, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also proposed the idea. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has been planning to build a massive cricket stadium in Amane village in Thane District. As learned by TOI reporter Gaurav Gupta, it will be a state-of-the-art facility with a huge capacity of nearly 100,000 people.
“The MCA is looking to build a massive 1 lakh capacity cricket stadium, spread on around 50 acres of open land in Amane, which is 26km off Thane, and 68km from the Wankhede Stadium. The MCA has filled the open tender floated by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to acquire the land parcel. The association is waiting for approval from the Maharashtra govt,” a source said.

The tender is done, and the Mumbai Cricket Association is just waiting on the government to approve it. This project will be managed by Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Last Friday, prior to the opening of IPL 2026, Deputy Chief Minister Fadnavis asked Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to approve building the stadium at a ceremony honouring the four Maharashtrian players from the two World Cup-winning teams.
“This stadium was a dream project of MCA president Amol Kale (who passed away on June 10 in New York). It will have all the modern amenities, including two grounds on which first-class matches can be played,” the source added.
Incidentally, the former president of the Mumbai Cricket Association, who passed away last year, was a close friend of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The MCA also honoured all the support staff members of the Indian team who were part of the two World Cup-winning squads. The TOI reports further confirmed that India's bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, who was in the World Cup squad, will also get a portion of the INR 11 crore award finalized for the World Cup-winning players.
