Mitchell: "We Can't Change the Pitch, But We'll Adapt"
As Pune gears up to unveil a bare, low-bounce black-soil pitch aimed at countering New Zealand's seamers, Daryl Mitchell remains unfazed. The New Zealand team is preparing for the second Test, following their historic victory in Bengaluru, which marked their first Test win in India in 36 years. After their first practice session on Tuesday, ground staff began trimming the pitch, potentially leaving it completely bare by match day.
"We can’t alter the surface," Mitchell stated just two days ahead of the Test. "Our focus is on responding to what’s in front of us and adapting accordingly. As New Zealanders, we take pride in staying grounded and present in the moment. We can’t change the wicket; we accept what we have. But I’m confident we’ll devise a strategy to take 20 wickets and hopefully score some runs."
Despite being known for his proactive approach against spin—demonstrated through his ability to step out, sweep, and reverse-sweep—Mitchell has been struggling for form. Since scoring a century against Sri Lanka in Christchurch in March last year, he has accumulated just 406 runs in 16 innings, averaging 27.06, significantly below his overall Test average of 46.08. However, Mitchell isn't overly concerned.
"That’s the nature of Test cricket," he reflected. "You go through phases where performance fluctuates. It’s about staying focused and trusting your ability."
With the Test just around the corner, Mitchell’s adaptability will be put to the test as New Zealand aims to build on their recent success.
