Sri Lanka have suffered a big setback in the T20 World Cup 2026 as fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana has been ruled out due to injury. Pathirana was injured during the match against Australia. While bowling his first over, he felt pain after the fourth ball to Mitchell Marsh.

Pathirana out, Dilshan Madhushanka replaces him in Sri Lanka squad

He held his left leg and went down. The physio came to check him, but he could not continue and was helped off the field. Captain Dasun Shanaka finished the over. Later, it was confirmed that Pathirana had a muscle strain. Reports said he would be out for at least three weeks, and that has now been confirmed.

The International Cricket Council has approved Dilshan Madhushanka as his replacement in the Sri Lanka team. This injury is also bad news for Kolkata Knight Riders. KKR bought Pathirana for INR 18 crore.

With Mustafizur Rahman already released and Harshit Rana also doubtful for IPL 2026, this injury adds to their problems. Because Pathirana has had injuries before, his return could take more time. Overall, losing Pathirana is a big loss for Sri Lanka, as his pace and different bowling style were important for the team.
