India Beat Australia by 48 Runs in Gold Coast T20I to Take 2-1 Series Lead

India Beat Australia by 48 Runs in Gold Coast T20I to Take 2-1 Series Lead

[ Poll: 1wV5vVZl ]

India beat Australia by 48 runs in a rare T20I match at Gold Coast and took an unbeatable 2-1 lead in the five-match series. Mitchell Marsh won the toss for the 20th time in T20Is and opted to bowl first yet again. Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill gave India a steady start, adding 56 for the first wicket. Adam Zampa, playing his first game of the series, struck in his first over and removed Abhishek for 28 off 21 balls.

Shivam Dube was promoted to number 3. Gill was the anchor of the ship, top-scoring with his 46 off 39 balls. Dube and Suryakumar Yadav both got a start, scoring 22 and 20, respectively. Nathan Ellis cleaned up Dube and Gill just when the partnerships for the 2nd and 3rd wickets were starting to grow.

India's middle order didn't really turn up, with the likes of Tilak Varma and Jitesh Sharma failing to go big. Washington Sundar hit a couple of clean strokes but fell for Ellis, scoring 12 off 7 balls. Axar Patel's cameo of 21* from 11 balls helped India to a competitive score of 167/8 in 20 overs.

India Crush Australia by 48 Runs to Take 2-1 Lead in T20I Series at Gold Coast

Ellis (3/21) and Zampa (3/45) picked up 3 wickets each to derail India's innings a bit. Bartlett and Stoinis picked up a wicket, with Ben Dwarshuis going wicketless on his return. In the absence of Travis Head, Matthew Short opened with Marsh. The two right-handers hit a few glorious strokes, adding 37 for the first wicket. Short scored 25, while Marsh hit 30, but neither was at their fluent best.

Axar broke the partnership, trapping Short and then also knocked over Josh Inglis after the keeper-batter hit a couple of boundaries. Australia kept losing wickets at regular intervals and, despite having a powerful middle order, failed to keep up with the scoring rate on a tough pitch for stroke play. Tim David, Josh Philippe and Marcus Stoinis all got into double digits, but never looked in control of the proceedings.

The Indian bowling attack soon took charge after the Aussie openers went off to a decent start. Axar was the wrecker-in-chief of their downfall, finishing with 2/20. Shivam Dube was given a couple of overs, and he picked up the big wickets of David and Marsh in his successive overs.

Arshdeep Singh (1/22), Jasprit Bumrah (1/27) and Varun Chakaravarthy (1/26) all bowled beautifully in different phases and picked up a wicket each. Sundar slightly stole the limelight at the back end of the innings as he ran through the lower order and also dismissed Stoinis, finishing with 3/3 in just 8 balls and saw Australia get all-out for just 119 in the penultimate over.
