Glenn Maxwell Announces Retirement from One-Day Internationals
Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from ODI cricket on Monday. He made his debut in 2012 against Afghanistan and went on to play 149 matches for Australia. In his ODI career, Maxwell scored 3,990 runs with an average of 33.81 and a strike rate of 126.70. He also took 77 wickets with his off-spin bowling and grabbed 91 catches in the field.
Maxwell was a key part of Australia’s ODI World Cup wins in 2015 and 2023. One of his most memorable moments came in the 2023 tournament, when he scored an unbeaten 201 while chasing against Afghanistan. He played that incredible knock despite struggling with severe cramps, and it’s now considered one of the greatest innings in World Cup history.
“I had a good chat with George Bailey (the Chair of Selectors) and asked him what he was thinking about the future,” Maxwell said on the Final Word podcast.
“We spoke about the 2027 World Cup, and I told him, ‘I don’t think I’ll be around for that. It’s time to start looking at other players for my spot and give them a real chance to make it their own.’ Hopefully, they get enough time to settle into that role.
“I’ve always said I wouldn’t give up my spot unless I felt it was the right time. I didn’t want to hang on just for a few more series and play for selfish reasons.”
