ECB Announces Brook as England’s New White-Ball Captain Post Buttler Era
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has named Harry Brook as the new captain for the England ODI and T20I cricket sides. Since making his international debut in 2022, Brook was marked as a likely future leader. He’s among the best group of batters who play for England in all formats.
"It's a real honour to be named England's white-ball captain. Ever since I was a kid playing cricket at Burley in Wharfedale, I dreamed of representing Yorkshire, playing for England, and maybe one day leading the team. To now be given that chance means a great deal to me," Brook said in an official press release.
"I want to thank my family and coaches who've supported me every step of the way. Their belief in me has made all the difference and I wouldn't be in this position without them. There's so much talent in this country, and I'm looking forward to getting started, moving us forward, and working towards winning series, World Cups and major events. I'm excited to get going and give it everything I've got." Brook added.
Brook’s Rise: From U-19 Leader to Senior Captain
Last year, the ECB appointed him as Jos Buttler’s vice-captain, and in Buttler’s absence, he led England in a 5-match series against Australia. When Buttler chose to resign from white-ball captaincy following a disappointing Champions Trophy 2025 run, it was widely anticipated that Brook would be announced as the new England ODI and T20I skipper. The 26-year-old has featured in 70 white-ball games for England and was a member of their victorious 2022 T20 World Cup campaign in Australia.
"I'm delighted that Harry Brook has accepted the role as England's white-ball captain across both formats. He's been part of our succession planning for some time, albeit this opportunity has come slightly earlier than expected," said Rob Key (ECB's Director of Cricket).
"Harry is not only an outstanding cricketer, but also has an excellent cricketing brain and a clear vision for both teams that will help drive us towards winning more series, World Cups and major global tournaments." Rob Key added.
England needs a fresh start after a series of disappointing white-ball performances including poor outings at the last three ICC tournaments. In response, the ECB added Brendon McCullum as white-ball coach from 2025, alongside his Test duties, but his pairing with Jos Buttler didn’t yield results with England losing 10 of their 11 white-ball matches this year.
Now, Harry Brook regarded as one of the top young batters in the world takes over as captain. Since his white-ball debut in 2022, he has played 26 ODIs (816 runs) and 44 T20Is and was part of England’s 2022 T20 World Cup-winning squad. A former U-19 captain, Brook’s first full-time leadership role will begin with a home series against West Indies in May.
