Delhi Capitals Representatives in Sydney for Partnership Talks with Cricket New South Wales

Delhi Capitals Representatives in Sydney for Partnership Talks with Cricket New South WalesDelhi Capitals is trying to become known everywhere, including places in the Australia. First, they set up teams in places like the UAE, USA, South Africa, and England. Now, they're looking at Australia for their next major step. This means they will be all over the place across the Atlantic and in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Some representatives from GMR, co-owners of Delhi Capitals, are already in Sydney preparing for important discussions. They are exploring the possibility of teaming up with Cricket New South Wales (CNSW). These talks are set to begin soon, possibly as early as Sunday, coinciding with the ongoing India-Australia Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Kiran Kumar Grandhi, the head of GMR Group, is expected to arrive in Sydney on Sunday to lead the discussions.

On the second day of the Test match, GMR representatives were seen at the SCG, and Grandhi is anticipated to visit during the third day's play. Though Grandhi is currently traveling and didn't immediately respond to Cricbuzz's message, the message was delivered successfully.

Sydney Visit Marks Key Step for Delhi Capitals Australian Expansion

It's unclear what CNSW could offer an IPL team or what the negotiations will focus on, as Cricket Australia has avoided any plans to privatize the Big Bash League (BBL). However, this isn’t the first time CNSW has reached out to an IPL team. A few years ago, CNSW contacted an IPL franchise to manage its second team in the Big Bash League, Sydney Thunder. Sydney Sixers is the main team linked with CNSW.

An official from a previous IPL team that had talks with CNSW mentioned that it's hard to pinpoint what CNSW can offer, as it doesn't have an independent entity or hold shares. The current negotiations are believed to be led by CNSW's CEO, Lee Germon, who captained New Zealand in his debut Test match against India in 1995. He did not respond to messages from Cricbuzz.

GMR Group Explores New Opportunities with Cricket NSW in Sydney

At some point, John Knox, the head of CNSW, may also join the talks. CNSW has an office in Sydney's Silverwater area, along with a high-performance center and a ground known as Cricket Central. It’s possible that GMR Group will seek a partnership to use these facilities, but details about the collaboration will become clearer soon.

Recently, the GMR Group has been on a buying spree, including acquiring the historic Hampshire County in England. They may also end up purchasing the Southern Brave team in The Hundred League, run by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). GMR also has a partnership with the Seattle Orcas in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the US and owns the Dubai Capitals in the ILT20 league in the UAE. In the SA20 league, GMR's partner JSW owns the Pretoria Capitals franchise, but they both share equal ownership in their WPL team. Additionally, GMR has secured a deal to promote a rugby league set to launch later this year.
