BCCI Confirms Shreyas Iyer on Path to Recovery After Surgery in Sydney

In some much-needed good news, star cricketer Shreyas Iyer has reportedly recovered from his spleen injury and is expected to return home soon. Because of this, his family has decided not to travel to Sydney to be by his side.
Shreyas’ father, Santosh Iyer, said that his son is under the care of an excellent team of doctors. He also mentioned that there’s a strong chance Shreyas will be discharged from the hospital before the end of the week. Since the BCCI has been closely supporting him, the family felt there was no need to fly to Sydney, where the 30-year-old is currently being treated at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital.
Shreyas Iyer Recovers from Spleen Injury, Set to Return Home Soon
“The BCCI is monitoring his injury and he is on a recovery path. The best doctor in Sydney is treating him. He is likely to get discharged by weekend and perhaps may get even before that. Since he is not a part of the T20I squad, he will return soon. Contrary to earlier reports, we are not going to Sydney," Santosh Iyer told Deccan Chronicle.
During the third ODI between Australia and India on Sunday at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Shreyas Iyer ran in to take a brilliant catch while fielding in the first innings.
But as he dived forward to grab the ball, he landed awkwardly on his stomach and took a hard hit near his ribs. The impact left him in pain, and he had to walk off the field midway through the game. Upon leaving the field, Shreyas complained of further discomfort, which prompted the team physio Kamlesh Jain to advise him to get immediately hospitalized.
At the private hospital in Sydney, it was later confirmed that Shreyas faced a laceration to his spleen, which also caused a lot of internal bleeding. However, the situation is currently under control, as also confirmed by India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav during the press conference on Wednesday.
BCCI Confirms Shreyas Iyer’s Condition Stable, Recovery Showing Good Progress
Later on Tuesday evening, the BCCI said that Shreyas Iyer’s injury was quickly detected and the bleeding was brought under control right away. They also confirmed that his condition is now stable.
"A repeat scan done on Tuesday, 28th October, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress," the BCCI further added.
