BBL 2025–26: David Warner Ruled Out of Sydney Thunder’s Season Opener with Injury
Sydney Thunder will begin their BBL 2025/26 season on a low note as captain David Warner will miss the opening match. The star batter picked up a right-leg injury during a casual beach outing with his children.

Warner’s non-appearance in this match is because the Thunder are trying to bounce back from their defeat at the hands of Hurricanes in the final of last season’s competition. He ended up being the team’s leading runs-scorer with a total of 405 runs.
His team, in a precautionary move being a new tournament, took this chance to keep him safe for other matches this week. Trent Copeland, General Manager of Thunder, announced Warner to have been getting treatment and is hoping to come back for a Sydney Derby on Saturday against Sydney Sixers.
He said that,
"We don't want to dwell on too much of the past but definitely last year's loss in the Grand Final is definitely going to fuel us on Tuesday. "It's not ideal not to have Davey in our team but at least we'll be a bit more careful in these early rounds of the tournament,"
In Warner’s absence, veteran all-rounder Chris Green will lead the side in this match against the Hurricanes. On the other side, Thunder have named young pacer Charlie Anderson as their Local Replacement Player. The 20-year-old will get a chance to prove himself.
Anderson did pretty well in List A matches, taking five wickets in three games with a best of 3/37.Putting it all into perspective, Warner had indicated before the start of the competition this year that he might be flexible with regards to where he bats, depending on the opposition and situation. His enforced absence in the opener could lead the Thunder to explore some batting roles.
