Akash Kumar Choudhary Smashes Fastest Fifty in First-Class Cricket with Eight Consecutive Sixes

Akash Kumar Choudhary Smashes Fastest Fifty in First-Class Cricket with Eight Consecutive Sixes

[ Poll: NZAd36LY ]

Meghalaya’s Akash Kumar Choudhary made cricket history at the Pithwala Ground in Surat by smashing eight consecutive sixes and scoring the fastest fifty ever in First-Class cricket. In a Ranji Trophy Plate Group match against Arunachal Pradesh, the lower-order batter took only nine minutes and eleven deliveries to reach the half-century, beating the previous record by a single ball. Kumar hit six sixes in an over, an eight consecutive sixes overall, to reach his half-century.

Kumar came in to bat at number 8 when Meghalaya were already 576/6, thanks to a double hundred from Arpit Bhatiwara and two other players who also scored centuries. With nothing to lose, Kumar started hitting freely and took the total to 628/6.

Interestingly, he reached his fifty but then played three dot balls, and his big-hitting run suddenly stopped. Meghalaya declared right after that. Choudhary ended with 50 not out from just 14 balls, hitting eight sixes and no fours. With this, he becomes only the second player after Ravi Shastri to hit six sixes in an over in Ranji Trophy history.

Kumar's influence on the match didn’t end there, he opened the bowling with the new ball, and also took the first wicket of the second innings to add to a memorable day.

The record that Akash broke had stood for 13 years. Back in 2012, Wayne White had smashed a fifty in just 12 balls for Leicestershire against Essex. In the same match, his teammate Ned Eckersley also reached his fifty in only 14 balls. Together, they hammered 77 runs in just 20 balls.

In the Ranji Trophy, the earlier record belonged to Bandeep Singh from Jammu and Kashmir. He reached his fifty in 15 balls against Tripura in Agartala in 2015. The current record for fastest half-century in Test cricket stands with Misbah ul Haq, who took 21 deliveries for his half-century in a Test match against Australia in Abu Dhabi.
