The Washington Freedom is an American professional Twenty20 cricket team that competes in Major League Cricket (MLC). The team is based in Washington, D.C. and was announced in
2023 as one of six franchises to play in Major League Cricket. The team is owned by Indian American entrepreneur Sanjay Govil.
The team plans to have their home ground at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.
With a seating capacity of 12000 the stadium would host both cricket and baseball games asfter its completion in summer 2025. The team is coached by the current coach of BBL team Sydney Sixers Greg Shipperd and Moises Henriques is appointed as the captain.
The Freedom had the second overall pick of the MLC’s inaugural domestic draft and selected Thunderbolts vice-captain Andries Gous as their first draft pick. Dane Piedt, Mukhtar Ahmed, and Saad Ali were also all picked up by the team, with Sri Lanka international Wanindu Hasaranga (who later pulled out of the competition) and South African quick Anrich Nortje both being stated as direct signings during the draft. Marco Jansen, Glenn Phillips, and Adam Milne were all also revealed as direct signings in May. The team then later revealed Sixers captain Moises Henriques will be the skipper. Shortly after, they announced that they had appointed Greg Shipperd as their head coach and Dale Steyn as their bowling coach. Later the following month, Josh Philippe, Ben Dwarshuis were additional direct signings. Tanveer Sangha was signed in the days leading up to the tournament as a replacement for Hasaranga.

Most Runs (Season): Mitchell Owen (313 runs), Rachin Ravindra (263 runs), and Glenn Maxwell (252 runs) are among the top run-scorers for the team, according to ESPNcricinfo.
High Scores: Matthew Short had a high score of 80 runs against TSK on July 16, 2023.
Major Stadiums
The Washington Freedom does not have a permanent home stadium currently; plans for a new cricket stadium in Frederick, Maryland, are in development but require local government approval. The team has used various venues for games, including the Maryland Soccerplex and RFK Stadium in its soccer history, and a temporary facility in Grand Prairie, Texas, for recent Major League Cricket (MLC) matches. The team's training and practice facilities are also under development.
