Will Rohit Sharma choose to drop himself before the Sydney Test, or will he delay any major decision until the conclusion of the series?

Rohit Sharma is feeling a lot of stress especially because he lost his turn to play quickly to Pat Cummins' short ball. People are starting to question the 38 year old Indian captain's future in Test cricket and are wondering when he's going to retire.

Ajit Agarkar, the individual in charge of picking the Indian cricket team is staying in Melbourne. I wouldn't be surprised if we hear that he's been conversing with Rohit regarding where Indian cricket is headed, especially with the team going through some tough changes.

Gavaskar added, "There will be a second innings and two more in Sydney. If he doesn't score in those three innings, questions will be asked."

Rohit hasn't been doing well at all scraping together just 155 runs in eight games; that breaks down to a very low average of 11.07 every time he's had 14 chances to bat. What's making this slump even harder is a surprising decision to change the opening lineup. His low scores are definitely making things worse.

Everyone's verbalizing about how if India doesn't make it into the World Test Championship the Sydney Test might end up being the last time Rohit plays a Test match but what if Rohit, being the captain and all decides to sit out for the Sydney Test? He might do that so players who are playing really well today, such as KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who is very good at hitting the best bowlers, can take over his spot.

In Indian cricket, it's not new for players to make difficult decisions that help the team. Gautam Gambhir, a major name in the IPL, decided to stop playing after starting a season with really bad performances because he knew he wasn't doing well as a T20 opener. Now, more old players are thinking about doing the same to help out their teams.

However, there is another aspect to consider: the upcoming ODI Champions Trophy, which takes place in just seven weeks. Rohit remains a force to reform with in the limited-overs format and the added pressure of Test cricket could affect his form in that regard as well. If relieved of Test responsibilities, he could well find his rhythm in ODIs.

Rohit's discomfort with batting in the middle order is another factor. After three innings in that position, he realized it wasn't working and made the decision to return to his familiar opening role, leading to Shubman Gill's from the side. But just as his pull shots have been misfiring, other strategic moves have failed too. Since the start of India's domestic season in September, Rohit has managed just one half-century in 11 Test innings, with an average of 12.36. These figures highlight a significant drop in form.

Rohit is struggling a lot more than Virat Kohli. Even though Kohli hasn't been at his best, you can always sense he is very close to a very big score as his century in Perth clearly showed us. Insecure, Rohit seems unsure about what he is doing and without any confidence, essentially not even looking like the player he used to be.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who is really proficient at understanding the technical side of cricket, discussed Rohit's dismissal in the best way. Ponting pointed it out saying it was a weak hit, clearly Rohit wasn't ready or focused enough for that moment.
